Getting an Apostille for Marriage Certificate

To play it safe, we say go ahead and order 4 certified copies of your marriage license.  (If you got married outside the US and obtaining that is very difficult, just get 1).

When your marriage certificate is issued by a US State, you can call the state and order 4 certified copies of your marriage certificate.  

In some cases, they may offer to send it to you with Apostille already.  It doesn’t hurt to ask if they offer that.  If yes, get 2 apostilled copies, and 2 certified copies. 

For most states, the apostille will be attached separately, so you just order the certified copies.  

Then you mail to a different place to request the apostille.  

The marriage certificate is a doc issued by the state.  As such, it does NOT need to be notarized, as the state already recognizes it.  

Make sure to send it to the state that issued it.  

For example, if you live in NC, and also got married in NC, then you send it to NC Secretary of State for Apostille.

However, if you live in NC, but you got married in NY, for example, then the marriage certificate needs to go to NY (Not NC).

Find your state at our database at the beginning of the instructions.  Make sure to use their cover letter.

Mail to office with finished dossier. 

Those do NOT need to be apostilled.  Just include them with your dossier when you mail everything to us.
